you can find a plethora of info on all the women on the tour at wtatour.com I believe, or try women's pro tennis tour in a search

Re: Who in the world does Safina beat?

Mostly all lower ranked players at not Semi/Final Grand slam events. That's all one needs to do to be #1. It worked out super well for Hingis. She stayed #1 without winning a Grand Slam for at least a year maybe 2 or more.

Safina seems to struggle more with the occasion than her opponent. She played a very competitive match against Serena at the US Open last fall; but today, I felt Venus was simply too much and MS. Safina had too little confidence & strategy to make things happen. Pretty much make anything happen.

Reminds me a lot of Jana Novatna in a way; maybe even worse. Not the style of play of course, but the inability to succeed. It's tougher for some than other. Both Venus & Serena went through this at one point; maybe she will emerge as well.

If not, she'll at least outdo her brother in the "Biggest Head Case" category.

    A win is a win.

They had an interview with her on that(someone please blow up NBC) disgraceful out to ruin tennis network.Honestly she has worked so hard, lost so much weight but it was all there when she said she knew she had the game but sometimes in the matches she loses her self confidence. I saw all of five minutes of the match today and felt for her but also felt for women's tennis which is in a dreadful state right now.

Re: Who in the world does Safina beat?

Who does she beat? She's gotta be beating up herself after that debacle. And not trying to kick someone when they're down: she was playing the best grass-court player of this generation and the reigning champion who is playing for her sixth Wimbledon title. No shame at all losing to Venus Williams at Wimbledon - has happened to the best of them - but it's the way she lost and the fact Venus made her look like a college player out there.

If you're No. 1 in the world you've gotta win more than a game in a Grand Slam semi. As much as the WTA Tour would probably like to see the younger players step up and carry the Tour forward, they've got to be honest with themselves: if you take Venus and Serena out of the picture it's just not the same sport. They better hope both of the sisters play well into their 30s because the way it's gone you can't count on anyone else to be consistent (in the majors) they way Venus and Serena can when they're fit and focused.

If I was Larry Scott's replacement would almost drive me to pick up the phone and try to persuade Justine to come back and get Kim committed to playing full time.

Safina is a hard worker and had a great clay-court season, but her game is one-dimensional - hit it hard crosscourt and do it again and again - it's almost like watching a crosscourt drill at times and seems like her serve tends to let he down in big matches. Today, it wasn't the double faults it was the fact she only won 7 points on her first serve. Seven. That's not even two games worth of points on her first serve.

People point out the disparity between Safina and the sisters, honestly I'd take Kuznetsova's or Dementieva's game over Safina's - realize she's ranked higher, but I think both Sveta and Elena can do more with the ball, they're better athletes too. Again, not trying to knock her when she's down and absolutely give her credit for working hard on and off the court, but really the rankings are irrelevant on the women's side (other than of course the draw and if Venus and Serena are on the same side or not) now when it comes to majors.

    AGREED

but why is it then that Wimbledon knows how to put the Williams on opposite sides of the draw

while the US Open screws em?????????

If the Open puts Venus and Serena on the same half of the draw this year we should demand a recount or a recall or something like that.
